As I reflect on this past year, it’s clear that McMillen Health has achieved significant milestones . We successfully delivered preventive health education programs to 97,224 students through 2,769 sessions. This accomplishment underscores our unwavering commitment to health education, driven by the generous support of our partners and stakeholders. We are especially grateful for a $1 million restricted grant from the Lilly Endowment, which has enabled us to make updates to our facility, expand our team of health educators, and enhance our Choices Today, Options Tomorrow (CTOT) curriculum with evidence-based certification. The Healthy Tomorrow app has seen remarkable advancements with funding from Purdue University’s Seed Funding. We’ve added a Maternal Mental Health category to support expectant and new mothers. Additionally, grants from Allen County Health First and DeKalb County Health First have allowed us to expand our “Mom & Me” days into new counties. Our other notable projects this year include: Development of the Super Smiles oral health curriculum for K-2 students in collaboration with the Indiana Department of Health. Creation of the Fresh Air for Baby & Me smoking cessation curriculum, serving pregnant or recently pregnant parents in Allen County, supported by the Together We Will grant. EXPANDING OUR REACH New Progams and Initiatives
New Nutrition Programs Pre-K-12 Funded by the Allen County Health First grant, we’ve updated and introduced new nutrition programs aimed at combating the concerning increase in obesity and chronic disease among our community. Newly developed programs will focus on essential topics such as healthy nutrition habits, understanding nutrition labels, food processing, lifelong wellness, and maintaining a balanced diet:
McMillen Health remains dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of our community. Each year, we host two Program Committee meetings where school administrators, counselors, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders join us virtually to share what health education needs they are seeing in their communities. These ideas, along with additional requests from teachers throughout the year, help us continually develop and update our programs. The following programs were developed as a result of these meetings.
Growing Healthy Habits (Preschool) BFF: Body Friendly Foods (Grades 2-3) Food, Farming, and Fun (Grades 4-5) My Body Blueprint (Grades 6-8)
Nutrition 101: Health & Wellness (Grades 9-12) Nutrition 201: Health & Wellness (Grades 9-12) Adult Slam Dunk the Funk Students with Disabilities: Nutrition 101
New Vaping Programs
Cloud of Concern Programs (3.0, 4.0, 5.0)
Responding to community concerns about early vaping, these new programs for 3rd to 5th graders educate students on the dangers and life-alerting consequences of vaping, as well as provide healthy stress management alternatives. By providing this knowledge, the program aims to help children make informed decisions and develop healthier habits.
Mom & Me Days We continue to enhance our Healthy Tomorrow app through our Mom & Me Days, which initially began in Allen County. Thanks to additional support, we’ve been able to expand these events into DeKalb County as well. This continuation and expansion was made possible through generous funding from Allen County Health First and DeKalb Health First grants. We will also be expanding into Noble County for the new year! We are thankful for the chance to continue and expand Mom & Me Days and look forward to further building on this initiative in the future.

Fresh Air for Baby & Me
Funded by the Together We Will grant, this smoking cessation program was created for pregnant or new parents aiming to quit smoking for their own benefit and that of their baby. The developed materials include:
A Facilitator’s Guide 9 Short, educational videos Pre & Post Participant Journal 9 bilingual educational handouts
We successfully launched the Fresh Air for Baby & Me program in Allen County, helping 76 parents in their efforts to quit smoking. For the 2024-2025 fiscal year, we plan to expand this vital program to Dekalb and Noble Counties.
Thanks to Purdue Seed Funding, we have expanded our esteemed app to include a new Maternal Mental Health category. This addition addresses the critical gap in resources for women dealing with perinatal mental health systems, including postpartum depression. By collaborating with a team of professionals and mothers, these resources aim to help parents recognize their symptoms and find the support they need, while promoting overall wellness during pregnancy and after bringing their baby home. Currently, Healthy Tomorrow features 86 videos, with several available in Arabic, Burmese, Dari/Farsi, and Spanish. More additions are to come in Fall of 2024. Healthy Tomorrow App Enhancements

Allen County Infant Mortality Community Action Network
Curriculum kits were put together to include Mick and Milly puppets, a bubble machine with two bottles of bubbles for practicing self-regulation techniques, 9 caregiver handouts, and the 9-module curriculum. Mini Mood Curriculum Expansion
We continue to work towards reducing infant mortality in Allen County through our Healthy Tomorrow app and participation in local committees. Our CEO serves on Every Birth Network’s Safe Medication Use committee. The Committee conducted a safe medication use study with 254 Allen County participants and discovered less than 50% of respondents knew what their medication was for and why it was prescribed to them. Key results of the study show education is crucial for moms and families to build trust with their providers. Full details of the report can be found here: bit.ly/4dMgmFQ

BRIGHT SMILES AHEAD Key Dental Health Projects
Super Smiles: A Dental Health Adventure Developed and designed for the Indiana Department of Health’s Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity and Division of Oral Health, this K-2 project includes a 5-lesson curriculum with corresponding educational videos and caregiver handouts in English and Spanish. Materials focus on brushing and flossing basics, healthy dental behaviors as a family, how and why to limit sugar, and who you meet and what to expect at the dental office.
Healthy People
We created oral health handouts and training for the American Academy of Pediatrics, focusing on the importance of fluoride, finding a dentist, mental health and how it relates to oral health and substance use.
Visually Impaired Preschool (VIPS)
Maverick Goes to the Dentist An illustrated children’s book following the journey of a 10-year-old non-verbal boy who has a condition called leukodystrophy. Piper, a close friend and neighbor, narrates the story of Maverick’s visit to the dentist. This project was funded by the Delta Dental Foundation.
For the first time, McMillen Health collaborated with the Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) of Indianapolis to develop resources for caregivers of children with blindness or low vision. The project included videos and handouts on oral health care in both English and Spanish. These resources provide guidance on oral hygiene, healthy dental habits, what to expect during a dentist visit, and how to advocate effectively for your child. This project was funded by the Delta Dental Foundation.

Anti-Vaping Campaign
FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS Celebrating Generosity
In response to alarming feedback from our Programming Committee indicating that 3rd graders are vaping, we launched an Anti-Vaping Campaign with a goal to raise $20,000. We developed three targeted vaping prevention programs for students in grades 3-5 to highlight the serious, life-altering consequences of vaping. We are excited to share that not only did we surpass our fundraising goal by raising $21,385, but we also reached 3,828 students with these new programs in the spring of 2024. Moving forward, we are committed to continuing our vital preventive health education efforts and remain eager to identify and address emerging needs within our community.

TAM’s Healthy Futures Thanks to the generous $1 million restricted grant from the Lilly Endowment, we were able to elevate our Director of Marketing and Communications to the position of Director of Development and Marketing. This transition paved the way for the creation of TAM’s Healthy Futures
Our second annual event raised an impressive $91,448.07, surpassing our previous records. This effort would not have been possible without the dedication of our donors, staff, Board of Directors, and Marketing Committee. We deeply appreciate the faith in our mission from all who attended and contributed. We are already looking forward to next year’s event taking place on Saturday, October 12th at the Parkview Mirro Center.
Fund, an initiative aimed at raising $50,000 annually. This fund will support essential preventive health education programs for students, cover prop costs, address operating needs, and more. We continue to go above and beyond and were able to raise a total of $51,473. We simply could not do what we do without the support of our donors and their faith in our mission.
Tee Off with TAM Our fourth annual golf outing at Cherry Hill Golf Course sold out and raised $36,966.94, with 120 golfers participating. The enthusiastic participation made this event truly memorable. We are grateful to everyone who came out and supported our cause. Our 5th annual Tee Off with TAM will take place on Thursday, June 5th. Stay tuned for more exciting events as we continue to combine fun with fundraising!

VOICES OF VALIDATION Teacher Feedback on Our Programs
“I feel like this unit caught the interest of all the students in the room. Many of them were able to make connections with it and it made learning more engaging for them. They really enjoyed practicing how to say no, I really enjoyed this part 🙂” -Alea Brandt’s 3rd graders from Pleasant Lake Elementary participated in Cloud of Concern 3.0.
“I always appreciate this curriculum and the presenters. I think the girls are just excited to finally get the “real” story from a trusted source. They formulate their own ideas and hear all sorts of stuff from friends, but they just seem relieved to have the facts.” -Nicki Wiggins’ 5th graders from Woodview Elementary School participated in Girls: Bodies in Progress.
